Significance
- The WAZA membership implies that all members will endeavour to keep a high standard of husbandry, veterinary care, participation in coordinated species management programmes, contribution to relevant scientific studies, compliance with national and international legislation, environmental education programmes, conservation activities, and support of regional and national associations.
- Through this association, IGZP will now have links to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and others.
What is WAZA?
- WAZA is the global alliance of regional associations, national federations, zoos and aquariums, dedicated to the care and conservation of animals and their habitats around the world.
- The membership consists of nearly 400 leading institutions and organisations around the world, and this number continues to grow.
- Since 1935, the goal of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) has been to guide, encourage and support the zoos, aquariums and like‑minded organisations of the world in animal care and welfare, environmental education and global conservation.
Function of WAZA
- The World Association Of Zoos and Aquariums promotes cooperation between leading zoos, aquariums, national and regional associations, as well as with leading wildlife experts, academics, and universities.
- They are the voice of a global community of high‑standard conservation‑based zoos and aquariums and also a catalyst for their joint conservation action.
- So by being nominated as a WAZA member, the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is going to be one of the most highly reputed associations; unifying the leading zoos and aquariums and the most influential regional zoo associations of the world.
- This global association also has the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), International Zoo Educators Association (IZE), Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) as its members.
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park
- Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is located amidst Kambalakonda Reserve Forest in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India.
- It is the third largest zoo in the country.
- The zoological park is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. It was declared open to the public on 19 May 1977
- It covers an area of 625 acres (253 ha). It is situated in Visakhapatnam amidst the scenic Eastern Ghats of India. It is surrounded by the Eastern Ghats on three sides and Bay of Bengal on the fourth side.
- Nearly eighty species of animals numbering to about eight hundred are present in the zoo. The Zoo Park has different sections for primates, carnivores, lesser carnivores, small mammals, reptiles, ungulates and birds caged in their natural ambiance.
