Russia
- Russia has made a classic mistake. Its an asymmetrical fight between Russia & Ukraine.
- History is replete with evidences that weak adversaries can do surprisingly well against bigger adversaries.
- Russia may eventually terrorise and bomb Ukraine into submission but Putin has left West more united, its own economy deeply hurt and its military prowess questioned.
- The only outcome for Putin would be a face saver rather than a complete victory. Russia will emerge weaker and more dependent on China.
The West
- USA is trying to do a balancing act of providing a strong response to Russia. But it is also stuck with a fact that it is dealing with an armed nuclear power and needs to avoid direct confrontation.
- EU is caught between Russia & USA. It wants to send a strong message to Russia but is also heavily dependent on it. Its credibility of liberal block is impugned because it is simply not willing to pay even the minimal economic price for a strong stand.
- Out of the crisis the West has gained only some unity but EU will be left out more energy insecure.
India & China
- The rest of the world is smelling an opportunity and a space for new equations.
- India and China’s non criticism of Russia over Ukraine is appalling. Looking out for one’s interests are worthy causes. But if they stand against Western hypocrisy, they must also stand against Russian aggression.
- Russia with its position is seeking to exploit the divide between East and West for its own advantage.
