  • Current availability in India is estimated to have between 30,000 and 50,000 ventilators.
  • It says the US has about 160,000 and is running short in most places.

STEPS TAKEN

  • To deal with this crippling shortage of medical equipment, the Union government, banned the export of ventilators, sanitizers and other ICU equipment with immediate effect

DRDO AND COVID 19

  • DRDO has developed hand sanitizer, ventilators, five-layer masks and body suits.
  • Around 4,000 litres of hand sanitizers have been developed for the Indian Armed Forces, Security Corps and Medical corps. The organization has developed 1,500 litres for the Ministry of Defence and 300 litres for the Parliament.
  • DRDO is to make 20,000 to 30,000 litres of hand sanitizers per day. The cost of the sanitizers is less than Rs 120 per litre

GOVERNMENT’S APPEAL

  • The Indian government, on March 24, reached out to the five automobile manufacturers –Tata Motors Ltd, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Honda Cars India Ltd and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd -to explore the possibility of manufacturing ventilators at the factories of these companies in collaboration with nine existing ventilator manufacturers.
