ON INDIA’S SPACE MISSION

India to unfurl tricolour in space in 2022: Narendra Modi India is proud of our scientists, who are excelling in their research and are at the forefront of innovation. CAN INDIA REALLY PUT A MAN IN SPACE BY 2022?

An Indian astronaut, be it a man or a woman, will go on a space odyssey by 2022 on board ‘Gaganyaan’ Till now, only Russia, US and China have been able to conduct independent human space missions Isro has roped in Indian Air Force pilots to identify the first set of astronauts for a human space flight. IAF pilot Rakesh Sharma was the only Indian to have travelled in space. He flew aboard the Soviet rocket Soyuz T-11 in 1984.

So far, the government has granted Rs 145 crore to do initial studies for a manned mission to space. According to reports, it is yet to approve the project that could potentially cost over $2 billion. Isro is operationalising its geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle Mk-3 (GSLV-MK-3) later this year. This rocket could potentially carry around eight tonnes spacecraft to lower earth orbit.

COST

After the announcement, ISRO chairman Mr. Sivan said ISRO has developed most of the technologies such as crew module and crew escape system for the mission and that the project would cost less than Rs. 10,000 crore and would include sending at least 3 Indians to space, 300-400km above in a spacecraft ,for at at least 7 days using GSLV Mk-III
