  • The President of India has been pleased to appoint Smt Anandiben Patel,
    to be the Governor of Madhya Pradesh with effect from the date she
    assumes charge of her office.

Vice President’s Secretariat

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu has asked builders and
    contractors to take part in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
    activities in a big way, adding that Government efforts to build an
    equitable society must be supplemented by Private Industries through
    CSR.

  • Vice President outlines 12 initiatives to make agriculture viable and remunerative
  • First is the use of good quality seeds which can enhance productivity by
    15 to 20%.
  • Second, a balanced use of fertilizers is essential for raising agricultural
    productivity.
  • Third, timely institutional credit plays a pivotal role for adoption of
    innovations by marginal and small farmers.
  • Fourth, diversification by supplementing farming with allied activities
    like dairying, fisheries and poultry can contribute significantly to
    increasing farmers’ incomes.
  • Fifth, farm mechanization in India must expand.
  • Sixth, intensification of agriculture and combining agriculture with
    horticulture and mechanization of hill agriculture can increase the
    farmers’ income.
  • Seventh, we must strengthen the ecosystem that encourages agro-based
    industries.
  • Eighth, there has to be a much better understanding of water use.
  • Ninth, farmers need to realize larger share of the consumer price.
  • Tenth, we may have to consider substantive reforms in the land policy.
  • Eleventh, we need to develop climate change resilient farming
    practices.
  • Twelfth, knowledge sharing processes must be streamlined.

Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation

  • Patna will soon be amongst the few major cities along river Ganga to
    have 100 percent sewage treatment capacity to ensure that no waste
    water gets discharged into the river.
  • The National Mission for Clean Ganga has put in place a comprehensive
    sewage management plan for the city, that will replace its existing,
    defunct system with one that will take care of its sewage treatment
    requirements till 2035.
  • The existing sewage treatment plants in Patna have long outlived their
    utility.
  • Once these projects are completed, Patna will be amongst the few
    cities having 100 % sewage treatment capacity.
  • Patna is one of the oldest inhabited cities in India with a population of
    over two million.
  • The western periphery of the city is bound by river Sone whereas on
    southern side flows Punpun River which later joins river Ganga.

PMO

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Davos in Switzerland on the 22nd
    and 23rd of this month.
  • Secretary (Economic Relations) in the External Affairs Ministry, Vijay
    Gokhale said, the Prime Minister will impress upon world leaders at
    World Economic Forum in Davos next week that India is an open economy
    and ready for global investments across sectors.
  • “Its a short visit, just twenty-four hours but it is a very focussed
    visit and it is taking place 20 years after the last time that a Prime
    Minister went to Davos which was in 1997. There will also be a
    bilateral engagement with the President of Switzerland. Important
    thing in this visit is going to be a signal that we engage with rest of
    the world in a very multi dimensional way.
  • Mr Modi will address the Plenary Session of World Economic Forum on the
    23rd during his visit.
    *The theme for this year’s WEF is Creating a Shared Future in a
    Fractured World.
  • Secretary (Industrial Policy and Promotion) Ramesh Abhishek said, India
    will showcase its achievements and reforms including economic
    development.
  • “That’s a great forum, great place where you have so many top CEOs
    coming. So the message of transformation that is happening in India’s
    economic policy, the changes that are being made, the ease of doing
    business that is being done, its a great forum to share those and also
    answer some of the issues and queries they may have any that gives
    comfort to the CEOs so that is the whole purpose.

Australian Group

  • India has joined the Australia Group export control regime.
  • Its an informal forum which seeks to ensure that exports do not
    contribute to development of chemical or biological weapons.
  • The inclusion is expected to raise India’s stature in the field of nonproliferation
    and help in acquiring critical technologies.
  • India has managed entry into Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR),
    the Wassenaar Arrangement and Australia Group despite not being a
    signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
