Preventive CBEC Officer – SSC CGL Job Profile, Work Environment, Promotions, Career, Path & More

The Staff Selection Commission CGL announces multiple job vacancies for various Departments of Governments every year. In this article, I am writing about Inspector (Preventive Officer) CBEC Job Profile, training, Salary and Career Path. This is also a prominent post preferred by a lot of candidates.A number of candidates must have multiple doubts and queries regarding the key responsibilities of an Inspector (Preventive Officer) in Central Board of Excise and Customs. SSC CGL is not at all easy as it seems to be every posts in CGL carries a number of responsibilities according to the Department they are allotted or applying for.
Preventive CBEC Officer – CBEC is a Government of India Organization which works towards collection and monitoring of indirect taxes in India. It collects indirect taxes and duties like Central Excise duty, Customs duty and, Service tax. A white uniform is compulsory for Preventive Officer (P.O.). Posting is done on seaports and airports. Preventive Officers gets posting in one of the 6 customs zones i.e. Chennai, cochin, Kolkata, Mumbai, Goa, Vishakhapatnam. After 1-3 years they can move to other excise zones.
Desk job – file work, noting-drafting, maintaining and monitoring files, reports etc.
Field job – Prevention of smuggling like Gold Smuggling, Drugs and Explosives which are banned by Government. Monitoring proper and timely payment of Customs Duties. The Preventive Officer has to check the boat, cargo, ships coming from foreign countries. You have to take responsibility and make sure to not no smuggling or illegal activities happen in your presence. Hence, this is a quite risky job.
Educational Qualifications for the post-
• You must clear Computer Proficiency Test (CPT).
• Candidate should have done Graduation from any recognized University.
• Age limit for applying is 30 years.

• Pay Scale: Rs. 9,300 – 34,800/-
• Grade Pay: Rs. 4,600/-
• Initial Pay: Rs. 9,300/-
• Total Pay: Rs. 13,900/-

• (DA) Dearness Allowance(107%)
• Mobile bills
Working Hours and Work Environment – You will be limited to work in the regular hours with overtime work on urgenyt basis. Hence, you will be able to enjoy a healthy work and personal life balance.
In a field posting, the work is usually done in shifts. Your work schedule can change drastically in an event of crisis. It is quite challenging to maintain a proper work life balance in a shift job.
Preventive Officers are posted mostly in 11 coastal cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochin or Chennai etc which are into 6 custom zones Kolkata, Kochin, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Mumbai and Goa.
Promotions and Career Path-
The post of Inspector (Preventive Officer) has a decent promotion scale. The first promotion generally comes after a service of 9 to 10 years. You need to complete your designated years to service as well as clear the confirmation test in the first 2 years to get promoted. The following promotion scale is followed in the career of Preventive Officer in CBEC.
• Superintendent of Customs (Group B Gazetted Officer).
• Assistant Commissioner (Group A).
Your second promotion will give an IRS Level Post. After that, you will be treated as a regular Group-A Officer. You will be eligible for all India posting after this promotion to Assistant Commissioner (IRS).
The further level of promotions can go as follows-
• Deputy Commissioner
• Joint Commissioner
• Additional Commissioner
