BIG BANG ELECTION PROMISE
- Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday announced that 20 percent families belonging to the poorest category will be given Rs 72,000 each annually as minimum income if his party comes to power.
- Congress intends to call their scheme NYAY (Nyuntam AayYojana or basic income scheme).

- According to the Central Statistics Office, there were 24.95 crore households in India in 2011. The bulk of the money would go to rural India, which accounted for a total of 16.87 crore households in 2011. There were 8.08 crore total urban households.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
- Rs 72,000 for 5 crore families would mean Rs 3,60,000 crore, which is about 13 per cent of Rs 27,84,200 crore budgeted expenditure for 2019-20
- The budgetary allocation of Rs 3,27,679.43 crore for centrally sponsored programmes covered the central government’s 29 schemes including the MNRGA, Swatch Bharat Mission, National Health Mission, and National Education Mission.
- Rahul Gandhi added “Minimum income threshold is Rs. 12,000. Any family is earning less than this, the government will pay the difference,” So according to this scheme, if any family earns Rs. 8000 PM then the government will add Rs. 4000.
