Railways will build the country’s first vertical-lift bridge connecting Rameswaram in Arabian Sea to mainland India

It will allow ships and steamers to pass through without any hinderance, replacing the existing 104-year-old Pamban bridge.
The bridge, over two-kilometre-long, which is likely to cost Rs. 250 crore, will have a 63-metre stretch which will lift up while remaining parallel to the deck to allow access to the ships.
It will be ready in the next four years, and along with the new railway link between Rameswaram in Pamban Island and Dhanuskodi, which is considered the starting point of Ram Setu, will help ferry thousands of pilgrims from the Hindu religious site to the mainland.

Railways has introduced Double Stack Dwarf Container Services to capture the lost traffic through new delivery model for domestic cargo
The dwarf containers can hold a volume of 67% more compared to traditional containers.

‘Zero FIR’ through mobile app while on board a train

Soon, passengers on board trains can lodge complain through a mobile app and it will be registered as ‘Zero FIR and immediately investigated by the RPF.
A pilot project under which complaints of harassment, theft, crime against women can be lodged through a mobile application is already ongoing in Madhya Pradesh which will be replicated across the country soon.
“The passenger now need not wait for the next station to lodge a complaint.
Zero-FIR means that a FIR can be filed in any police station (i.e.: irrespective of place of incident/jurisdiction) and the same can be later transferred to the appropriate police station.

eDrishti: software to help Railways Minister keep track of punctuality of trains launched by Indian Railways

Indian Railways has launched a software named- ‘eDrishti’, that will enable the Union Railway Minister Shri. Piyush Goyal to keep track of punctuality of trains as well as freight and passenger earnings from anywhere in the country.
The software has been developed by the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS).

The first three phase energy efficient Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) coaches built with stainless steel bodies were rolled out by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
i. The MEMU train consists of eight coaches and two driving motor coaches.
ii. The carrying capacity of trailer coaches is 325 with 84 seats, while the motor coaches which has 55 seats can carry upto226 passengers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in his constituency, Varanasi, to flag off the world’s first diesel to electric locomotive. The project was completed by the Diesel Locomotives Works in record time.
The conversion of the diesel locomotive into an electronic one was a landmark achievement of the Indian Railways, as part of its efforts to completely electrify the broad gauge network in the country.
The high profile project of the Railways was part of its Mission 100 per cent electrification and de-carbonization agenda.
The work on the project began in December 2017 and from conceptualizing to building the electric locomotive was carried out in just 69 days
