Republic Day

This day honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India and thus, turning the nation into a newly formed republic.
Although the Constitution was adopted by the Constituent assembly on 26^th November 1949, 26 January was chosen as the date for Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when Purna Swaraj resolution was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress

Every year, Republic day is celebrated with a spectacular parade on Rajpath in Delhi (as has been the tradition since 1951).
The Parade shows India’s military might and cultural diversity.
It features marching contingents of armed forces, paramilitary , cultural tableaus from states and ministries and precision flying by aircrafts.
The President of India who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute of the Parade.

3^rd time a Brazilian president was the chief guest on RD Parade
Breaking from tradition, Prime Minister Modi for the first time paid tributes to the country’s fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial, instead of Amar Jawan Jyoti, ahead of the parade.

Military bands
*The Army air defence corps took part for the first time in RD parade
The 1^st contingent was 61^ST Cavalry – The only active serving horse regiment in the world

Captain Tania Shergill became the SECOND woman officer to lead an all-men contingent.
She led the Corps of Signals marching contingent
In 2019 , Lt Bhavana Kasturi lead an all men contingent of the India Army Service Corps
Camel Mounted Band of the Border Security Force

Total 22 tableaus –
16 from states and union territories
9 from various ministries and departments
The Ministry of Jal Shakti made its debut and showcased in its tableau the government’s new initiative “Jal Jeevan Mission”
The National Disaster Response Force tableau featured cutting-edge technology and instruments used by the NDRF

It is a heavy lift, twin-rotor helicopter which has enhanced IAF’s lift capability across a range of military and HADR missions.
‘Trishul’ flypast was carried out by three Advanced Light Helicopters.
This was the first time a tri-service formation took part in a Republic Day parade.
