  • In India, more than two-thirds of people are suffering from non-communicable disease (NCDs) in India are in the 26-59 age group, the “most productive-life age groups”.
  • What is alarming is that such diseases increase after 18 years and show a quantum leap when an individual crosses the age of 35.

  • According to the survey, every 116 out of 1,000 Indians suffer from the top three NCDs such as hypertension, digestive disease, and diabetes.
  • Hypertension is the most prevalent NCDs in India with 6% respondents suffering from it, followed by digestive diseases with 3.2%.
  • Other illnesses include respiratory diseases, brain/neurological disorders, heart diseases/cardiovascular diseases, kidney disorders, and cancer.

  • According to survey, the risk of having NCDs among the population is almost four times as they move from the age of 25 toward the 50s.
  • 70 + age individuals have the highest risk of having an NCD — every two out of five persons have NCDs in 70+ age group.

The Details

  • In the survey, Odisha was found to have the highest prevalence of NCDs (272 per 1000 population) while Gujarat registered the lowest prevalence (60 per 1000).
  • Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and West Bengal were other states where NCD prevalence was higher.
  • There is a higher prevalence of hypertension and diabetes in urban areas than rural areas.
  • Males are found to be more prone to NCDs than female.
