‘Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR)’
- propulsion based missile system. Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR): It is a missile propulsion technology jointly developed by India and Russia.
- NOTES Defence scientists conducted a test of the propulsion-based missile system from the ITR, Chandipur, Odisha AIR-TO-AIR MISSILE An air-to-air missile (AAM) is a missile fired from an aircraft for the purpose of destroying another aircraft. AAMs are typically powered by one or more rocket motors, usually solid fuelled
INDIA AIR TO AIR MISSILES
- Astra (missile) –
- All weather beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, India. It is the first air-to-air missile developed by India. (Used in Sukhoi) [Operational range of Astra – 80 ~110km]
- Future development – DRDO plans to develop a Mk 2 variant of Astra with a larger engagement envelope and a range of 100 km (62 mi). Multiple different propulsion systems have been considered, including liquid-fuel ramjet, solid-fuel ramjet and dual pulse solid rocket motor.
INDIA AIR TO AIR MISSILES
- Novator KS-172 – The Novator KS-172 is a Russian air-to-air missile designed as an “AWACS killer“ (Airborne Warning and Control System)
ABOUT THE LATEST MISSILE TEST
- he missile was integrated with a SFDR propulsion system, which is an all-ready version of a future beyond visual range air-to-air missile, which the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is pursuing. The first test of this advanced technology driven missile was carried out in May 2018. ‘SOLID FUEL DUCTED RAMJET (SFDR)’ PROPULSION BASED MISSILE SYSTEM SFDR Missile will lead to the development of a Long Range Surface to Air Defence Missile System and also will lead to the development of Next-generation Air-to-Air Missile Systems to be equipped on Indian Air Force fighter jets. According to DRDO, SFDR will have a range of 120 km at 8 km altitude
TECHNOLOGY BEHIND SFDR
- Conventional Rocket Motor based BVRAAMs have higher burning out rate since it works in the same amount of thrust levels from the moment it is fired, which means it can run out of fuel when it reaches its target in longer range and highly maneuverable targets can outrun the missile in the last phase if missile is fired from a long range.
- SFDR will have faster acceleration last phase due to Ducted Ramjet Propulsion Technology and unlike rocket motor, Ducted Ramjet Propulsioncan can throttle its engine during different phases of flight thus saving fuel for final approaches towards its target.
