    • The term ‘soft state’ was introduced by Gunnar Myrdal, while comparing South Asian countries with European countries.
    • According to him, South Asian countries follow the policy of soft state.The policy of ‘soft state’ means a lenient attitude of state towards social deviance. Soft states do not take hard decisions, even if the situation demands
    • n sociology, deviance describes an action or behavior that violates social norms, including a formally enacted rule, as well as informal violations of social norms
    • robbery, theft, rape, murder, and assault.
    • This soft state policy weakens the capacity of the state in enforcing rule of law. Not taking hard decisions increases the crime rate, violence, corruption etc.
    • In India, this policy is being followed in the postindependence period. as a result of destruction of strong local powers during the colonial period.
    • Myrdal says that effective governments follow strict enforcement of rule of law.
    • India is vulnerable to terror attacks. To fight terror, the country needs to strengthen its security and intelligence. The need of hour is to revamp border security, maritime security and aerial security. The nation needs a complete recast of its intelligence mechanism. There is a pressing need for stringent counter-terrorism policy and its implementation.
  • In order to weed out terrorism from its roots, India needs to terrorise the terrorists and their sympathizers.
  • Indira Gandhi who was once considered as one of the world’s powerful leader was the Prince Minister of the country who proved that India was not a soft state through her actions In the war with Pakistan in 1971 leading to the creation of Bangladesh, annexation of Sikkim in 1975 and suppression of separatist move-ment in the country.
