History of this bridge
- In the year 1887, a meter gauge rail link between Nirmali and Bhaptiahi (Saraigarh) was provided by the Bengal North West Railway.
- Due to severe Indo-Nepal earthquake in 1934 this rail link washed away in heavy flood
- Owing to meandering nature of river Kosi, no attempt was made to restore this link for a long period.

Strategic Importance
- The bridge in Bihar is of strategic importance for the country and seeks to provide a shorter route to India’s Northeast region.
- The bridge will provide an alternative Broad gauge route of length 610 km between Gorakhpur and Katihar
- The existing route of 505 km via Chapra and Barauni at present is a highly saturated corridor.
- Ease congestion around the ‘Chicken’s neck’.
- The line will improve ground accessibilities as well as the nation’s capability to transport men and material from the northern part of India to the Northeastern states of the country through an alternate route.
