WHAT HAPPENED RECENTLY?
No sale of BS-IV vehicles The Supreme Court has banned the sale and registration of motor vehicles conforming to the emission standard Bharat Stage-IV in the entire country from April 1, 2020 Bharat Stage (BS) emission norms are standards instituted by the government to regulate the output of air pollutants from motor vehicles The Central Pollution Control Board sets timelines and standards which have to be followed by automakers

quoted that India has the dubious distinction of having 15 out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world and thus such measure was necessary The problem of pollution is not limited to the NCR of Delhi but it is a problem which has engulfed the entire country especially the major cities We skipped BS 5 Norms
SHIFT TO BS-VI NORMS
The country will have to shift to the cleaner Bharat-VI fuel from April 1, 2020 The BS-IV norms have been enforced across the country since April 2017 In 2016, the Centre had announced the country would skip the BS-V norms altogether and adopt BS-VI norms by 2020
HOW IS BS 4 DIFFERENT FROM BS 6
The major difference in standards between the existing BS-IV and new BS-VI auto fuel norms is presence of sulphur. BS-VI fuel is estimated to bring around an 80% reduction in sulphur content — from 50 parts per million (ppm) to 10 ppm.
HOW IS BS 4 DIFFERENT FROM BS 6
It will also bring down the emission of NOx (nitrogen oxides) from diesel cars by nearly 70 % and 25% from cars with petrol engines. It will also bring down cancer causing particulate matter emissions from diesel engine cars by phenomenal 80%.

WHY CAN’T WE IMPLEMENT THE BS VI NOW?
It takes years for automakers to develop a new kind of an engine or to tweak around with the current ones used in their vehicles. To sum it up, India is making an effort to reach the global standards and hence, a lot of changes in the trends, sales and choices made by customers are expected in the coming years
