Astana Peace Talks

Defeat of ISIS in Raqqa and Mosul
- 2017 JULY – Mosul retaken from ISIS by Iraqi army with help of Peshmerga
- 2017 October – The Islamic State group is driven from Raqqa, its de-facto capital in Syria by SDF – US backed .
- 2017 November – Syrian army (Assad) takes full control of Deir al-Zour from Islamic State. Syrian and Iraqi forces put IS under pressure in the dwindling areas still under its control.
TURKEY’S TROOPS IN SYRIA
- Kurdish forces have strengthened at the expense of IS/ISIS
- Operation Olive Branch – The offensive is against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) surrounding the Syrian city of Afrin.
- Turkey also claims it is fighting ISIL,though the group does not exist in Afrin District
- Rojava – Democratic Federation of Northern Syria
