Telia Rumal
- The Telia Rumal traces its origin back to a small village, Puttapaka in Telangana
- Earlier only 20 families of the village were engaged in weaving of this handloom.
- Now about 800 have been trained in the craft.
How is it made?
- Telia Rumal cloth involves complex handmade work with cotton loom which can be only created by using the traditional handloom process and not by any other mechanical means.
- Tie and dye technique uses oil for treatment of yarn to retain softness
- The Telia Rumal exhibits a variety of designs and motifs in three particular colours namely red, black and white.
- These handlooms cannot be made quickly for online marketing as it requires a long time to create individual pieces.
Historical significance
- Telia Rumal received the patronization of Nizam of Hyderabad and flourished in their reign.
- The officers working in the court of the Nizam would wear the Chituki Telia Rumal as a symbolic representation of status and were worn as a veil by princesses in the court of erstwhile Nizam.
- Also, it was used as turban cloth by Arabs.
- Telia Rumals are offered at the dargah of Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan.
What are Geographical Indication tags?
- A I . tag recognises the place of origin of a product and the specific qualities or means of production associated with it.
- Acting as a certification, it is a way of ensuring that similar products from elsewhere cannot be sold under this name.
- Approved by the Geneva-headquartered World Trade Organization
- GIs have been defined under Article 22(1) of the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights(TRIPS) Agreement
- In India, the GI tag is governed by the
- Geographical Indication of Goods
- (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999
- GI came into force with effect from 15 September 2003.
- The tag is valid for a decade, after which it can be renewed for another 10 years.
