In a rare archaeological find, a three-headed sculpture of Lord Vishnu, which dates to the ninth century, was found in the Jhelum River.

The finely carved and well-dressed sculpture demonstrates clearly the sculptural style in use at Avantipora during the ninth century AD.

The first image of a Vaikuntha Chaturmurti is said to be of the pre-Kushan period, belonging to the 2nd century BC.

The middle head is a smiling human face depicting Vishnu.The face to his right is in the form of a lion (Narasimha) and the one to his left is in the form of a boar (Varaha).

History of Avantipora-अवंतीपोरा का इतिहास

- Located on the banks of the river Jhelum, a small but historically important town of Awantipora is 28 km away from Srinagar in Anantnag district of Jammu Kashmir.
- झेलम नदी के तट पर स्थित, अवंतीपोरा का एक छोटा लेकिन ऐतिहासिक रूप से महत्वपूर्ण शहर जम्मू कश्मीर के अनंतनाग जिले में श्रीनगर से 28 किमी दूर है।
- The town was founded by king Avantivarman of the Utpala dynasty during AD 855 – 883 AD.Hence the place was named Awantipora.
- इस शहर की स्थापना उत्पल वंश के राजा अवंतीवर्मन ने 855-883 ईस्वी के दौरान की थी। इसलिए इस स्थान का नाम अवंतीपोरा पड़ा।
- He erected two magnificent temples at Avantipura, one dedicated to Lord Vishnu called Avantiswami and the other to Lord Shiva which is known as Avantisvara.
