Government Jobs are not at all easy as it seems to be. Everyone secretly wishes to work in the government sector as it provides job security, other facilities including medical, holidays) and inevitable salary and moreover stress-free life in comparison to the private sector where your job is target driven and the life full of stress. I am one of them who want to enjoy life at the fullest and being SSC CGL aspirant, based on my past experiences, I decided to pen down the basic and important information of the top five posts in SSC CGL, I hope it will help those who are preparing for SSC CGL exam. As sharing knowledge is a good deed.
There are five top job profiles in SSC CGL-
1. Income Tax Inspector (ITI)-
Income Tax Inspector is a Group-C interview post in Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which works for the collection of direct taxes in our country. Direct tax means Income tax, Corporate tax, Capital tax etc. Income Tax Officer is the most popular job offered by SSC CGL, which has a great social status and a very good salary.
Staff Selection Commission (SSC) offers several vacancies under the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam. This exam is conducted every year to recruit candidatesfor various reputed posts in different departments like SSC CGL Income Tax Inspector, Preventive Officer, Central Excise Inspector, Statistical Investigator, Sub Inspector in CBI etc.
Income tax department has both desk and field jobs depends on the work allotted and the area of posting.
There are two sections of the post:
Assessment Section-In this section you will be primarily handling all the desk jobs and other works comes from Income Tax Inspector. Your job is the assessment of Income Tax which people or the company is liable to pay, and handling Refund Claims and TDS queries also fall under your job profile.
Non-Assessment Section- In this section you will be required to do fieldwork. You will be the par of rapid response team which usually conducts raids and to find the defaulters. Your desk job will be limited to gathering proper evidence against the defaulters.
Educational Qualifications for ITI-
• Candidate must have done graduation in any discipline.
• Age limit for applying is 21-27 years. There is a relaxation in upper age limit for OBC, ST, and SC.
Pay Scale –
• Pay Scale: Rs. 9,300 – 34,800/-
• Grade Pay: Rs. 4,600/-
• Initial Pay: Rs. 9,300/-
• Total Pay: Rs. 13,900/-
Working hours- Working hours are generally fixed and defined by departments, the office timing is 9 am to 5 pm. At the time of the raid, you have to work for longer hours.

2. Central Excise Inspector –
This post falls under Central Board of Excise and Customs(CBEC) is one of the preferable posts in SSC CGL.
Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) is a part of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. It deals with the tasks of formulation of policy concerning levy and collection of Customs & Central Excise duties and Service Tax, prevention of smuggling and administration of matters relating to Customs, Central Excise, Service Tax and Narcotics to the extent under CBEC’s purview.
Desk Job- you will be assigned to filing paperwork and cross-checking documents for validation, assessment of goods and services tax is done by excise inspector and report is submitted to Superintendent. Works on the registration request by manufacturers, verifications of their units.
Field Job- Monitoring the goods which needto be exported and put the seal of excise department on them. Prevention of smuggling. You will also assist search and raid teams.
Educational Qualifications for CBEC-
• Candidate must have graduation degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
• Age limit for applying is 20-30 years.
Pay Scale-
• Pay Scale: Rs. 9,300 – 34,800/-
• Grade Pay: Rs. 4,600/-
• Initial Pay: Rs. 9,300/-
• Total Pay: Rs. 13,900/-
Working hours- It totally depends on your profile, if it’s clerical work then you will get enough time for your family, but field Excise Inspector needs to work over time. There is a lot of work pressure on Excise Inspector.
3. External Affairs Assistant-
As the name suggests it is an assistant level post in the Ministry of External Affairs. If you are posted as the general assistant, you have to do Clerical or file related work like planning and examining documents to be signed between the nations. In addition to that, you will also be responsible for coordinating between various offices of consulates and the Head Quarter at New Delhi and promoting friendly relations with the receiving states. If you are posted as a cipher, you will do the Coding and decoding work by learning high languages related to national security.
This is the only department of SSC CGL where you can get foreign postings also.
Educational Qualifications for the post-
Candidate must have graduation degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
Age limit for applying is 20-30 years.

Working Hours- If you are working as a General Assistant then you will have normal working hours. But if you are working as Cipher then you will have rotational day and night shifts according to the work assigned, as well as there will be work pressure.
4. Assistant Section Officer (CSS)-
This is one of the best post offered by SSC CGL and provides the chance to work in different ministries of Government of India. Under Ministries there are directorates, under directorates there are sections, Assistant Section Officer use to work in those sections to various duties assigned to the section. After being selected as Assistant Section Officer in CSS, there is a training period of two months and you will be trained in various works related to the job like noting, drafting and administrative terms etc. Throughout your career, you need to work in the capital of India i.e. New Delhi.
Educational Qualifications for the post-
• You must clear Computer Proficiency Test (CPT), if you failed CPT, you will not be eligible for this post even after you are securing All India rank 1.
• Age limit for applying is 30 years.
Pay Scale-
• Pay Scale: Rs. 9,300 – 34,800/-
• Grade Pay: Rs. 4,600/-
• Initial Pay: Rs. 9,300/-
• Total Pay: Rs. 13,900/-
Working Hours-Office timings will be normal from 9 am to 5 pm, no extra working hour or working shifts and you will get Saturday and Sunday off as well. This job is stress-free and there is no work pressure.
5. Preventive CBEC Officer-
CBEC is a Government of India Organization which works towards collection and monitoring of indirect taxes in India. It collects indirect taxes and duties like Central Excise duty, Customs duty and, Service tax. A white uniform is compulsory for Preventive Officer (P.O.). Posting is done on seaports and airports. Preventive Officers gets posting in one of the 6 customs zones i.e. Chennai, Cochin, Kolkata, Mumbai, Goa, Vishakhapatnam. After 1-3 years they can move to other excise zones.
Desk job- file work, noting-drafting, maintaining and monitoring files, reports etc.
Field job- Prevention of smuggling like Gold Smuggling, Drugs and Explosives which are banned by Government. Monitoring proper and timely payment of Customs Duties. The Preventive Officer has to check the boat, cargo, ships coming from foreign countries.

Working Hours-
The work is usually divided into shifts as customs prevention is round the clock process. You will have to be ready to work in different shifts according to the duty changes, and this job has some work pressure.
