TRUMP HEIGHTS
TRUMP HEIGHTS
- Trump Heights is a planned settlement in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights named after and in honour of the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump.
- Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights are widely regarded as illegal under international law, but the Israeli government disputes this.
WHY DID TRUMP DO ALL THIS FOR ISRAEL?
- The decision is a gift to conservative evangelical voters who support Israel for reasons of biblical prophecy, as well as to his US donors who are also supportive of right- wing politicians in Israel.
EVANGELICAL VOTERS
- In the 2016 presidential election, close to 80 percent of white evangelical Christians in the United States voted for Donald Trump.
- Evangelicals make up about a quarter of all voters in the United States, having a significant presence in many of the swing states that determine the results of U.S. elections.
THE PROPHECY
- Evangelical Christians support Israel’s co- option of land that they believe belongs to a biblical vision of greater Israel because reconstituting greater Israel is a necessary precondition for the ultimate Second Coming of Christ
THERE HAVE BEEN UN RESOLUTIONS AGAINST ISRAELI SETTLEMENTS
- United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 was adopted on 23 December 2016. It concerns the Israeli settlements in “Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem”.
- The resolution passed in a 14–0 vote by members of the
- U.N. Security Council (UNSC). Four members with United Nations Security Council veto power, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom, voted for the resolution, but the United States abstained.
- The resolution states that Israel‘s settlement activity constitutes a “flagrant violation” of international law and has “no legal validity”. It demands that Israel stop such activity and fulfill its obligations as an occupying power under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
POINTS TO NOTE
- U.S is not being a responsible member of UNSC by ignoring a UNSC resolution on llegal Israeli Settlements
- This move by the U.S undermines the importance of International law
