US HOUSE OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZES ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

U.S CONGRESS

  • The United States House of Representatives is the lower house of the United States Congress, the Senate being the upper house

NUMBERS IN THE HOUSES

  • The House has 235 Democrats, 199 Republicans, and one independent. The Democrats could, therefore, impeach Trump with no Republican support.
  • The Senate has 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who usually vote with the Democrats. Conviction of the President would require 67 votes, which cannot happen unless some Republicans vote against him.

U.S AGAINST TURKEY

  • The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to officially recognize the mass killings of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire as genocide.
  • The historic vote was 405 to 11 and is seen as a rebuke to Turkey, which has spent nearly a century denying there was a genocide.

SANCTIONS

  • Pelosi, D-Calif., fast-tracked the sanctions legislation, which goes well beyond President Donald Trump’s temporary sanctions on Turkey. Although it passed the House by a vote of 405-to-16, its fate in the Senate is unclear.
  • Among other things, the legislation would:
  1. Ban most U.S. arms sales to Turkey and sanction other countries’ military transactions.
  2. Sanctions senior Turkish officials involved in the Syria attack
  3. Blacklist a state-owned bank that is central to Turkey’s economy.
  • Require the State Department to provide a detailed account of Erdogan’s net worth and income – along with that of his family members.

SIGNIFICANCE

  • U.S Lawmakers also passed a deeply contentious measure to commemorate the Armenian genocide, a historic move that will almost certainly exacerbate U.S.-Turkey tensions.
  • Over the past two decades, similar resolutions have been repeatedly introduced and passed committee three times, but have never reached the floor, collapsing under pressure from successive administrations. This has been the case under Bill Clinton in 2000, George W. Bush in 2007 and Barack Obama in 2010.

NOTES

  • The Armenians have been calling on the international community to recognize the mass extinctions as genocide.
  •  Till now, 31 countries including Russia, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Italy as well as 49 among the 50 US states have recognized the killings as genocide.

OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIA

  •  A $2.3-billion deal to build fleet support vessels in collaboration with a Turkish shipyard has come into question after security concerns were raised over the firm, including links with Pakistan.

OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIA

  • India can use this opportunity to pile pressure on Turkey

 WILL NATO THROW OUT TURKEY?

  • Ever since Ankara joined NATO in 1952, the alliance has stressed the importance of Turkey’s Incirlik base, which was a strategic bridge to the Black and Mediterranean Seas during the Cold War. Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea has underscored the continuing importance of the bridge-point.
