THE GREAT GAME BETWEEN U.S CHINA
- The US has maintained close ties with Taiwan since it split from mainland China in 1949 after the end of a bloody civil war.
- But until recently Washington has avoided major displays of friendship so as to not antagonize Beijing, which continues to view the self-governing democracy of around 24 million people as an inseparable part of its territory.
THE GREAT BLUNDER OF 1979
- The U.S. ceased recognizing the ROC in 1979 as “China” and started referring to it as “Taiwan”.

CHINA REACTED SHARPLY AFTER AZAR’S VISIT
MASSIVE U.S TAIWAN DEFENCE DEAL
- On 15thaugust 2020 Taiwan formally signed an agreement to buy 66 of thelatest model F-16 jets built by Lockheed Martin Corp., a move likely to further inflame tensions between the US and China.
MAGNITUDE
- Taiwan’s purchase of the F-16s marks the first sale of advanced fighter jets to the island since President George HW Bush announced approval for 150 F-16s in 1992.

- Taiwan already had 115 F-16sand now they will get 66 more
CHINA’S THREAT
- China’s Foreign Ministry told reporters that “U.S. arms sales to Taiwan severely violate the one-China principle.”
- The spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said at the time that her government was urging the U.S. to “refrain” from selling the “fighter jets to Taiwan and stop arms sales to, and military contact with, Taiwan. Otherwise, the Chinese side will surely make strong reactions, and the U.S. will have to bear all the consequences.”
