CURRENT AFFAIR

  • The United States of America is planning to bar pregnant women from attaining visas for “birth  tourism”.

RATIONALE

  • The measures are to be adopted to curb the number of foreigners who use the visa to secure automatic  permanent citizenship for their children by giving  birth on American soil.
  • The crackdown on “birth tourism” is for public safety and national security as well as to maintain the  integrity of the US immigration system because the  birth tourism industry threatens to overburden  valuable hospital and national resources.

  • Apply for naturalization.

PROTECTIONISM POLICY OF U.S.

  • The concept of protectionism refers to economic policies that can be implemented by governments in order to limit  trade across countries, whose primary goal is to promote  fairer competition and help domestic companies by  making their goods more competitive than foreign ones.
  • Protectionist policies protect the producers, businesses, and workers of the import-competing sector in a country  from foreign competitors. However, they adversely affect  consumers in general and harm the producers and workers  in export sectors, both in the country implementing  protectionist policies, and in the countries protected

  • Import quotas
  • Administrative barriers
