Why UK is stationing vessels?

Of course due to its Indo-Pacific tilt..!!

  • K. is going to station new patrol vessels in the Indo-Pacific region for “at least the next five years” as part of plans by the U.S. and its allies to check China’s naval expansion.
  • Adm Tony Radakin of HM navy said, Taiwan Strait is clearly “part of the free and open Indo-Pacific.

What kind of vessels? & Why?

  • Adm Tony Radakin
    • Two patrol vessels would be in the region for “at least the next five years.“ They’re smaller ships which will complement the carrier group, which will be in the region for a relatively short period of time.
    • The ships will help guard against illegal activities like maritime smuggling etc.
    • How will they maintain them?
      • Britain has few military bases in the region and support from friendly nations is essential to make the deployment work. We would look to link with Japan as a friend and ally in the region in the same way as we would with Australia.

What next?

  • Can UK play a bigger role in Indo Pacific?
    • UK’s military spending for fiscal 2020 was around $60 billion.
    • That is about 20% more than Japan but much less than the U.S. ($778b), China ($252b). India’s spending in same fiscal was $72b..!!
    • In fact, British troops deployed in Asia and Oceania is a mere 2% of the total strength of the British military.

What next?

  • UK aims to strengthen relations with Asian countries by helping maintain maritime order, including freedom of navigation, while also benefiting from the region’s economic growth.
  • UK is also negotiating to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
  • Adm Radakin:
    • “We want to have the ships that are operating, much more strongly with Oman, with India, using Diego Garcia and operating down the east coast of Africa.”
