LOT TO GAIN
- Government think-tank NITI Aayog on Wednesday said the focus of the ministry dealing with travel, tourism and hospitality should be to increase India’s share in global international tourist arrivals from 1.18 per cent to 3 per cent in the next five years.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
- The announcement was made after the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, underway at Baku (Azerbaijan) from June 30 to July 10, examined the nomination of the Walled City of Jaipur for inclusion in the World Heritage list. (Video being made on 6th July)
INDIA’S SITES
- With Jaipur’s inclusion, the number of heritage sites across India that are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, has grown to 38, including 30 cultural properties, seven natural properties and one mixed site.
- Ahmedabad became the first Indian city to get into the prestigious list in 2017.
THE DECISION MAKING BODY
- The World Heritage Committee is composed of representatives of 21 States Parties to the World Heritage Convention who meet annually. The Committee is in charge of implementing the Convention.
- To date, 1,092 sites in 167 countries have been inscribed on the World Heritage List

- Why is Jaipur called the pink city?
- In 1876, the Prince of Wales and Queen Victoria visited India on a tour. Since pink denotes the color of hospitality, Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur painted the whole city pink in color to welcome the guests. It was then that Lord Albert exclaimed Jaipur to be a ‘Pink City’, and hence the name.
NOTES
- Jaipur was founded in 1727 by the Rajput ruler Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer, after whom the city is named. It was one of the earliest planned cities of modern India, designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
- It is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Jantar Mantar and the Amer Fort.
