Swach Bharat abhiyan aims to end the widespread practice of open defecation by proving private and community toilets. But there is also a need to change the behavioural aspect of Attitude of the poor people towards open defecation, otherwise the best efforts of the govt would be in vain.
Social influence is a condition when a person’s thoughts and actions are influenced by the society around him. Schools could be used as mediums to teach children the importance of toilets who could influence their parents and hence the larger society in the villages
Persuasion is the process of bringing attitudinal change in the individual or a group of individuals towards a desired direction through democratic means. Celebrities, politicians and religious leaders could be roped in to teach by example, which is a very strong way to persuade people to change their attitude. Even advertisementspromoting the use of toilets help in changing the mindset of people. Skits, play cards and slogans like cleanliness is next to godliness would help in bringing the change in attitude.
Gandhiji said that toilets are the modern temples. So the investment on infrastructure should be matched with emotional investment in changing the attitude of the poor so that India becomes clean and healthy.
