UPSC IES/ISS Exam Pattern 2023

The candidate must go through two phases of selection, the first of which is a written test and the second of which is a viva-voce or interview. Both IES and ISS applicants will sit for a written exam worth 1000 points. Candidates for the India Statistical Service are required to write descriptive and objective papers. Long and short response questions are included in descriptive papers. The viva-voce or interview test carries a 200-mark maximum.

  • The written test has a 1000-point maximum and covers 5 subjects.
  • The remaining examination will take 3 hours in addition to the 2 hours allotted for statistics I and II.
  • Both Statistics I and II include objective tests with 80 questions each and a 200-point maximum; the exam lasts two ho.
  • Small problems/short questions account for 50% of the descriptive papers in Statistics III and IV, whereas long answer questions make up the remaining 50%. Each section must have at least one mandatory short answer and one mandatory long response question.
  • Both the IES and ISS exams use the same general English and general education papers.

UPSC IES/ISS Interview

A call for the interview will be made to the candidate who passed the written exam. 200 points are awarded for the interview. The examination board representatives will interview the candidate. The purpose of the interview is to determine if the candidate will remain in the position. The purpose of the interview is to further assess the candidate’s general knowledge and abilities in addition to the written examination.

The purpose of the interview procedure is to determine the candidate’s standards, not to perform a strict cross-verification. The candidate will be put to the test on their capacity for leadership as well as their capacity for intellectual curiosity and grasping power. They will also be put through mental agility exams.
