Reinstating Friendship between India and Bangladesh

Context: The Government of India engaged in several meetings with its counterpart in Bangladesh and has decided to start a new passenger train service named Mitali Express.
About the initiative:

  • This passenger train will further strengthen the people-to-people connectivity between both countries through the Haldibari-Chilahati revived rail link.
  • The rail link will deepen the friendship between the countries that have a shared history.
  • The Mitali Express connects New Jalpaiguri (in India) and Dhaka in Bangladesh.
  • It will run biweekly.
  • The new passenger service trains will promote tourism in both countries along with increased accessibility.
  • This will enable the citizens of Bangladesh to access Nepal through an Indian rail link.

Cooperative Societies on GeM Platform
Context

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the registration of cooperative societies as ‘Buyers’ on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform.

Details

  • The Ministry of Cooperation is encouraging Multi-State Cooperative Societies and Cooperative Societies registered under State Cooperative Acts to register on the GeM platform.
  • The move will facilitate the cooperative societies to access over 4.5 million vendors on the platform and ensure a transparent, economic and efficient procurement system.
  • Currently, there are over 8.54 lakh cooperatives in India with about 29 crore memberships and they have been performing a wide range of activities for the production of goods and services.

Operation Mahila Suraksha
Context

  • Railway Protection Force (RPF) rescued 150 girls/women during the pan India drive of “Operation Mahila Suraksha”.

  • A pan India drive “Operation Mahila Suraksha” was launched from 3rd to 31st May 2022.

Objective: Providing enhanced safety and security to women passengers travelling by trains for their entire journey.

  • During the drive, RPF arrested over 7000 individuals who were travelling unauthorisedly in the coaches reserved for women.
  • About 283 teams of trained women officers and personnel with an average deployment of over 1000 lady RPF personnel per day are deployed covering over 200 stations across the Indian railways.
  • About 5000 awareness campaigns were organized to educate the passengers about their safety and Dos & Don’ts during their journey.

Scheme for Residential Education For Students in High schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA)

  • Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar will launch Scheme for Residential Education For Students in High schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA).
  • Scheme for Residential Education For Students in High schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA)
  • SHRESTHA scheme has been formulated to provide quality education and opportunities for the poorest of the poor Scheduled Caste students based on the constitutional mandate.
  • The scheme aims to provide access to quality education and a level playing field for all the students.
  • The scheme will provide high-quality residential education free of cost from class 9th to 12th to the meritorious poor students from Scheduled Caste communities whose annual family income is up to Rs. 2.5 Lakh per annum.

World Bicycle Day
Context

  • Nationwide programmes were launched on the occasion of World Bicycle Day.

  • The United Nations General Assembly declared June 3rd as International World Bicycle Day in 2018.
  • Professor Leszek Sibilski, a Polish social scientist working in the United States, led a grassroots campaign to promote a UN Resolution for World Bicycle Day.
  • Objective: is to recognise the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been used for over 200 years and its nature of being an affordable, reliable and environmentally sustainable means of transport.
  • The day aims to revive the culture of cycling for basic transportation, commutation, and strengthening physical and mental health.

Puneet Sagar Campaign

Context
NCC has launched the latest phase of its nationwide flagship campaign ‘Puneet Sagar Abhiyan’.
Puneet Sagar Abhiyan

  • National Cadet Corps (NCC) undertakes Puneet Sagar Abhiyan which is a nationwide campaign to clean seashores/beaches of plastic & other waste materials and increase awareness about cleanliness.
  • The campaign was launched in December 2021.
  • Aim: to propagate the message of ‘Importance of Clean Seashores/Beaches’ and ‘Swachh Bharat’ among the local population.
  • Over 74,000 cadets from 10 States and 4 Union Territories will participate in the latest edition of the campaign.
  • The NCC cadets will be accompanied by alumni, locals and tourists.
  • The waste collected during the campaign will be disposed of in an environment-friendly manner in cooperation with Government/private agencies.

Sagarmala Young Professional Scheme
Context

  • The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has formulated the Sagarmala Young Professional Scheme.

  • The scheme aims to engage talented, forward-thinking and dynamic young professionals in various divisions of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
  • The scheme envisages providing a practical learning experience for young professionals.
  • The scheme will provide the opportunity for young professionals to learn about the functioning of the government and developmental policy concerns.
  • Professionals are required to deliver high-quality inputs in areas such as infrastructure, data analysis, project management, start-up, innovation, skill development, digital transformation, environment, etc.
  • Eligibility: Professionals are required to have a qualification in B.E/B.Tech, B. Planning and/or MBA or equivalent degree and a minimum of three years of relevant work experience.
  • The initial period of engagement would be 2 years which can be extended to additional 2 years based on the performance.

International Telecommunications Union
Context: India will contest re-election to the International Telecommunications Union Council to promote its shared vision of looking at the world as a connected society and enabling an effective global digital transformation.
An Overview:

  • India has been a member of the ITU since 1869 and has participated in the developmental agendas of the Union that are directed towards the benefit of connecting people through Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
  • India took part in the World Summit of Information Society 2022 which was organised by the International Telecommunications Union in association with other agencies.
  • The WSIS is co-organised by UNESCO, United Nations Development Programme, and the UN Conference on Trade and Development.
  • This Summit aims at taking forward the initiatives of ITU and establishing an information society for the world community.
  • There were high-level discussions on the topic of “Bridging the Digital Divide”.

LiFE Movement

Context: The Prime Minister launched the LiFE movement which was first propounded by him during the 26th Conference of Parties in Glasgow.
Important Highlights:

  • The LiFE movement invites a collective effort to develop a sense of an environment-conscious lifestyle.
  • The emphasis is on the mindful utilisation of natural resources instead of mindless and destructive consumption.
  • This is a significant step that exemplifies India’s commitment to protecting the environment and mitigating climate change issues.
  • This movement will provide a platform welcoming multiple ideas across academia, universities, research institutes and industries with an extensive scope of community participation.

Indian President’s visit to Maghar

Context:

  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind paid tributes to Sant Kabir and inaugurated Sant Kabir Academy and Research Centre and Swadesh Darshan Yojana at Kabir Chaura Dham, Maghar, Uttar Pradesh.

Sant Kabir Das:

  • Sant Kabir Das was a 15th-century mystic poet, saint and social reformer and a proponent of the Bhakti Movement.
  • He was born in the city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and spent the last moments of his life in the city of Maghar (Uttar Pradesh).
  • Sant Kabir Das was a highly acclaimed poet of his time. Some of his famous writings include ‘Bijak’ and ‘Kabir Granthawali’.
  • Bijak has a huge collection of poems.
  • Kabir Das mainly wrote his poems in Hindi mixing with Avadhi, Braj, and Bhojpuri.

India Bangladesh Joint military exercise- EX SAMPRITI-X
Context:

  • A joint military training exercise between the Indian and Bangladesh military named Ex SAMPRITI-X is being conducted at Jashore Military Station in Bangladesh.

Details:

  • Exercise SAMPRITI is conducted alternately by both countries.
  • The Exercise aims to strengthen interoperability and cooperation between both the armies and to share best practices.
  • The exercise will also provide an opportunity for strengthening trust between the armies of both the Nations and further contribute to peace and stability in the region.
