CHINA’S CONCERN
- China calls Trump’s Space Force a ‘threat to peace’ though it has its own military space branch
- The country formed its own Space Force-like agency back in 2015. Only, it’s called the ‘People’s Liberation Army Strategic Support Force’ (SSF).
- Though the name may be taxing, it serves the same function as the Space Force — it handles everything to do with space, cyber, and electronic warfare.
INDIA
- The Defence Space Agency (DSA) is a tri-service agency of the Indian Armed Forces. Headquartered in Bengaluru, the agency is tasked with operating the space-warfare assets of India.
- The DSA draws personnel from all three branches of the Armed Forces.
UNITED STATES SPACE FORCE
- What is the mission of the U.S. Space Force?
- A:The U.S. Space Force is a military service that organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. USSF responsibilities will include developing military space professionals, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power, and organizing space forces to present to our Combatant Commands.
SECURING ASSETS
- Military systems in space provide crucial information to the troops. For example, GPS satellites help the military hit targets precisely.
- Satellites gather intelligence, detecting things like missile launches.
- They’re also used for communication and collect data on the weather.
WHAT SPACE FORCE IS NOT
- It’s not about putting military service members in space, it has nothing to do with NASA, it’s not about protecting Earth from asteroids or aliens
- Nor will any special weapon be deployed in Space to counter enemies on Earth
HOW MILITARY SYSTEMS IN SPACE CAN BE IN DANGER?
- The Growing Risk of a Major Satellite Cyber Attack
NOTES
- Cyber attacks on satellites “have the potential to wreak havoc on strategic weapons systems and undermine deterrence by creating uncertainty and confusion,”
INDIAN PERSPECTIVE
- “In September, we are going to launch a new series of remote-sensing satellite Geo-Imaging Satellite-1 (Gisat-1) and Gisat-2 in November.” Gisat will carry a geo-imager with multi-spectral (visible, near infra-red and thermal), multi-resolution (50m to 1.5 km) imaging instruments that will enhance the country’s land mapping capabilities. Gisat has both military and civilian use.
