WHERE IS SIACHEN GLACIER
A BIT OF HISTORY
- In the Shimla Agreement of 1972, the Siachen area was termed as barren and useless. But this agreement did not determine the boundary between India and Pakistan.
- India got intelligence in 1984 that Pakistan has ordered to prepare some “hot suit” to a European company to capture the area of Siachen Glacier. But before the consignment of Pakistan suit taken place; India got ready these “hot suits” and deployed its troops on “Bilafond La Pass”.
A BIT OF HISTORY
- India launched Operation Meghdoot (named after the divine cloud messenger in a Sanskrit play of Kalidasa) on 13 April 1984 when the “Kumaon Regiment” of the Indian Army and the “Indian Air Force” went into the Glacier.

THE OCCASION
- The Defence Minister was in Ladakh, along with Army chief Gen. Bipin Rawat, to inaugurate a strategically located bridge across the Shyok River which will provide easy connectivity with the Daulat Beg Oldi sector along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
COL CHEWANG RINCHEN BRIDGE
- The 1,400 feet long bridge situated at the height of 14,650 feet has been constructed by the Border Road Organisation (BRO) within a period of just 15 months.
- The bridge will reduce travel time by about half and help in development of border areas and villages across Shyok River. It is 45 km east of Line of Actual Control with China

COLONEL CHEWANG RINCHEN – THE LION OF L ADAKH
- The bridge has been named after the legendary Colonel Chewang Rinchen who is India’s youngest ever recipient of the MahaVir Chakra – which he was awarded for heroics at the age of just 17. He was one of only six Indian service personnel to have twice won the MahaVir Chakra (MVC), the second highest Indian gallantry decoration.
JAMMU AND KASHMIR REORGANISATION ACT, 2019
- The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 is an act of the Parliament of India. It contains provisions to reconstitute the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, one to be eponymously called Jammu and Kashmir, and the other Ladakh. The act will come into effect on 31 October 2019. Central Government wants Ladakh to be promoted as a major tourist hub
