The 2022 edition of the World Press Freedom Index has been published by the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) assessing the state of journalism in 180 countries and territories.

India’s position has been consistently falling in the index since 2016 when it was ranked 133.

The reasons behind fall in ranking is the increased “violence against journalists”.
रैंकिंग में गिरावट के पीछे का कारण “पत्रकारों के खिलाफ हिंसा” में वृद्धि है।
According to the index the media in India, among nations reputed to be more democratic, faces pressure from “increasingly authoritarian and/or nationalist governments”.

India slipped eight positions in this year’s index and is termed as one of the most dangerous countries for media, with an average of 3-4 journalists being killed each year.

Journalists are exposed to all kinds of physical violence including police violence, ambushes by political activists, and deadly reprisals by criminal groups or corrupt local officials.

World Press Freedom Index is published every year since 2002 by Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) or Reporters Without Borders.
वर्ल्ड प्रेस फ्रीडम इंडेक्स 2002 से हर साल रिपोर्टर्स सैन्स फ्रंटियर (आरएसएफ) या रिपोर्टर्स विदाउट बॉर्डर्स द्वारा प्रकाशित किया जाता है।
The Index ranks countries and regions according to the level of freedom available to journalists.
यह सूचकांक पत्रकारों के लिए उपलब्ध स्वतंत्रता के स्तर के अनुसार देशों और क्षेत्रों को रैंक करता है।
The Index’s rankings are based on a score ranging from 0 to 100 that is assigned to each country or territory, with 100 being the best possible score (the highest possible level of press freedom) and 0 the worst.

Each country or territory’s score is evaluated using five contextual indicators : political context, legal framework, economic context, sociocultural context and safety.

Norway (1st) Denmark (2nd), Sweden (3rd) Estonia (4th) and Finland (5th) grabbed the top positions.

World Press Freedom Day is observed every year on May 3 as a reminder to the governments of the need to respect their commitments to press freedom.
विश्व प्रेस स्वतंत्रता दिवस हर साल 3 मई को सरकारों को प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता के प्रति अपनी प्रतिबद्धताओं का सम्मान करने की आवश्यकता की याद दिलाने के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
World Press Freedom Day 2022 is also a reflection among media professionals on the issues of press freedom and professional ethics.

भारत में प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता

Freedom of press is not expressly protected by the Indian legal system but it is impliedly protected under article 19(1) (a) of the constitution, which states – “All citizens shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression”.
प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता भारतीय कानूनी प्रणाली द्वारा स्पष्ट रूप से संरक्षित नहीं है, लेकिन यह संविधान के अनुच्छेद 19(1) (ए) के तहत निहित रूप से संरक्षित है, जिसमें कहा गया है – “सभी नागरिकों को भाषण और अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता का अधिकार होगा”।
The Constitution, the supreme law of the land, guarantees freedom of speech and expression under Article 19, which deals with ‘Protection of certain rights regarding freedom of speech, etc.
