World’s first electrified double stack container tunnel – Free PDF Download


ABOUT THE TUNNEL

  •  Length of Tunnel: 1 Km Long Location of Tunnel: Cut through the Aravallis on the railway’s Western Dedicated Freight Corridor near Haryana’s Sohna.
  •  It connects Mewat and Gurgaon districts of Haryana, and negotiates a steep gradient on the uphill and downhill slope of the Aravalli range.

ABOUT THE TUNNEL

  • Plans to ply electric goods train with doublestack containers through it in the next 12 months.

WDFC OF RAILWAYS

  • Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) is a broad gauge corridor under construction that will connect Delhi and Mumbai, the national and business capitals of India.
  •  DFC will separate freight and passenger traffic to increase the speed of freight movement.
  • The WDFC will cover a distance of 1,483km of double-lane electric track from JNPT to Dadri passing through Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Palanpur, Phulera and Rewari.


ROCKS OF ARAVALLIS

  • Engineers had to blast through 2,500 to 500 million-years-old proterozoic rocks to build the world’s first electrified doublestack container tunnel.
  •  The last blasting was completed on Friday. (24-July)
  •  “This means the excavation work for the one-kilometre tunnel is complete and it is now through and through,”

NO QUESTION OVER STABILITY…

Geologically, the tunnel is safe and stable as it is caved through 2,500 to 500 million-years-old proterozoic rocks, mainly quartzite, schists and slates of Alwar/Azabgarh groups of Delhi supergroup rocks, which have high bearing capacity, according to the statement.

BIGGEST TUNNEL IN INDIA

  • The D-shaped tunnel has a cross-sectional area of 150 square metres to accommodate double line with higher overhead equipment to enable double-stack container movement on the freight corridor.
  •  Cross-sectional area wise, it is one of the biggest railway tunnels in India.

HEIGHT IS 12.5 AT TURNS…

  • The dimension of tunnel is 14.5 metre in width and 10.5 metre in heightin straight portion, and 15 metre wide and 12.5 metre height to provide extra clearance while negotiating the curve.
  • The height of tunnel is 6.5 meters and the minimum height of contact wire is maintained at 5.2 meters.
  • The country’s first electrified tunnel is built in the shape of a ‘horse shoe’ using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).





“Despite the coronavirus pandemic, work is progressing at a fast and resolute pace in DFCCIL. The Eastern (excluding the PPP section) and Western DFC is slated for completion in June 2022,” according to the statement.
